Window display criticism from a retired librarian in Tulsa changed my whole approach
About two months back, I had a display up featuring all recent sci-fi releases with a big paper rocket ship I'd spent a whole evening on. This older woman came in, not to buy anything, just to tell me the rocket looked like a deformed carrot and that the books were stacked so tightly nobody could actually see the covers. She said, and I quote, 'You're showing off your crafting, not the books.' That stung, but she was right. I tore it down, spaced the books out with just their front covers facing out, and added a simple typed note with a one-line pitch for each title. Sales for that table went up about 30 percent over the next two weeks. Now I always ask myself if the window is about the books or about me before I even start gluing anything. Has anyone else gotten harsh feedback from a customer that actually improved their setup?
