Discovered a bootable USB trick that saved my bacon on a dead drive

Had a customer bring in an old laptop with a dying hard drive, clicking and all. Tried cloning it directly but the drive kept failing halfway through at around 30%. After 3 tries I gave up on traditional methods. Used a live Linux USB to boot the machine and pull files straight to an external SSD instead. Has anyone else had better luck with Linux for data recovery over Windows based tools?

For like 8 years straight I ONLY pointed my camera up when there were big towering cumulonimbus or scary shelf clouds rolling in. I thought those were the ONLY clouds worth posting here because they had drama and shape. Then about 6 months ago I was sitting in my backyard in Cleveland on a completely gray overcast day, and I decided to take a shot of this endless flat gray ceiling just to see. Something clicked. Now I mostly look for subtle texture in those boring layers, like faint ripples or slight color shifts near sunset. The old me would have laughed at that. So which side wins for you guys, do you chase the big dramatic storms or do you find beauty in the plain flat days too? Has anyone else made this switch and regretted it or loved it?

Appreciation post: The ugly ceramic rooster I thought was tacky for years

For the longest time I hated this massive ceramic rooster my grandma left me. It sat in my kitchen for 8 years collecting dust until last month when my neighbor noticed the tiny signature on the bottom. She looked it up and turns out it's a local potter from the 1940s who only made 12 of these things. Now I'm the one who was wrong about the heirloom, not her taste.

My shed foundation took 3 tries to get right

I built a 10x12 shed in my backyard last spring and thought I could save money by doing the foundation myself. First try I just put down some gravel and concrete blocks, but after a month the whole thing was wobbling like crazy. Second time I dug deeper and tried to level it with sand, but a heavy rain washed everything out from under the blocks. Finally gave up and called a buddy who does concrete work, he helped me pour six sonotube piers sunk below the frost line. Took me from April to late June to figure out what should have been a weekend job. Has anyone else learned the hard way that skimping on foundation prep just costs you more time and money in the end?

Just figured out a better way to handle airport food costs

I always used to buy a meal at the airport after security, thinking it was my only choice. Last trip, I packed a simple sandwich and an apple from home instead. The airport burger and fries in Denver cost me $24, but my homemade lunch was maybe $3 total. I saved over $20 and didn't have to wait in line. Has anyone else tried packing food and found it works for longer layovers too?

DAE think we overcomplicate network segmentation?

I was setting up a new VLAN scheme for a branch office in Phoenix and started with a super detailed plan for 15 separate segments. After a day of headaches, I just grouped things by device type and function, ending up with 5 VLANs, and it's been running smooth for 3 months. Is the 'micro-segmentation' trend actually worth the extra config time?

PSA: My maple drawer box glue-up warped overnight

I built a set of drawer boxes from 1/2 inch maple ply, glued and nailed the corners. The shop was about 65 degrees and I used Titebond III. Woke up this morning and every single box had a noticeable bow across the front panel. I think the plywood core was holding moisture that released unevenly against the glue line. Has anyone else had plywood move like this right after assembly? What's your go-to method to stop it?

PSA: Saw a brick archway on a new apartment building downtown and the mortar joints look way too thin, maybe 3/8 inch. Is that a new style or a problem?

Shoutout to the guy at the Portland trade show who saved my project

I was there demoing a new water-based lacquer on a maple table. Third coat went on cloudy, like milk. Showed it to an old timer at the booth next to mine. He asked if I'd cleaned the surface with mineral spirits before starting. I had. He said, 'That's your problem. That stuff leaves a film. Use denatured alcohol.' Switched to it, and the next coat dried crystal clear. Anyone else run into this with water-based finishes?
