Just realized my library hold requests were expiring because I wasn't checking my email

Last Tuesday I went to grab a book I'd been waiting 3 weeks for, only to find out the hold expired 2 days before I showed up. The librarian at the desk said, 'Yeah, we send a notice 48 hours before it gets pulled.' I didn't even know I had email notifications turned off in my account settings. Has anyone else missed holds because of this or am I the only one who spaced on checking?

That chat with an old-school butcher at the deli counter got me rethinking my whole approach to breaking down a pork shoulder

He told me I was fighting the grain instead of working with it and handed me a 30-year-old boning knife that glided through like butter, and now I'm wondering if I've been making things harder than they need to be for the past 7 years - anyone else ever get schooled by someone who's been at this since before you were born?

Hit 1,000 capacitor replacements last week and it made me stop and think

I was cleaning up my bench after a long job and just out of curiosity I added up how many caps I've swapped out since I started keeping track back in 2018. It came to 1,043 exactly. That number kind of hit me because most of those were on LCD monitors and old motherboards where a bad cap was the only thing wrong. It made me realize how often we toss stuff that just needs a $2 part. Has anyone else ever added up a specific repair they do over and over?

Pro tip: don't pay for that fancy driveway sealing service on W. 210th

I dropped $450 on a crew from Rocky River to reseal my concrete driveway last spring, and it started peeling off by August in big ugly patches. They promised a 5-year warranty but ghosted me when I called back, so I'm out the cash and stuck with a mess. Anyone else get burned by those door-to-door sealing guys around here?

Found out my grandma's 50 year old starter is actually younger than me

Was digging through my mom's recipe box last weekend and found a note that my grandma started her 'vintage' sourdough starter in 1998, not the 70s like she always claimed. I was born in 95 so that thing is a total fraud lol. Has anyone else caught family members lying about how old their starter is?

Unpopular take on that fuel system cleaner everyone swears by

Tried a bottle of Techron in my 2012 F-150 last week and it actually made my rough idle worse, not better. Am I the only one who thinks these additives do more harm than good on higher mileage engines?

Blew a cap on a motherboard using a hot air station on too high

I was reworking a laptop mobo from a 2017 Dell XPS 15, trying to remove a bad HDMI port. Set my hot air station to 400C like I always do for big components, but I guess the shielding on that board held the heat in too long. Popped a nearby ceramic cap and had to spend 2 hours tracing the short. Learned I need to preheat the board to 100C first and drop my air temp by 30 degrees for dense areas. Any of you guys use a specific temp curve for multi-layer boards?

Grocery store cashier made a comment about my reusable bags that stuck with me for days

She said "bet you've saved hundreds by now" and I actually did the math later and it was $380 over 3 years from the 10 cent bag credits, how often do we miss the small wins that add up like that?

Rant: Found out my code was exposing user emails for 6 months

I was digging through my server logs last night and discovered a stat that floored me - my first web app had been leaking user emails in the API responses since launch. A buddy who does pentesting in Austin pointed it out during a casual code review. Turns out I forgot to strip the email field from the JSON output on the user profile endpoint. 47 people had signed up in that time. Has anyone else found a scary bug like this way after the fact?
