That $60 'floral foam alternative' I bought online was literally just a brick of biodegradable packing peanuts glued together

That chicken wire cage story is painfully familiar, I've got the scars to prove it. Now I just leave the cages loose and let the stems kinda push their own way in, saves my thumbs and I don't have to explain the hammer marks on the table.

I used to scoff at load charts until I nearly dropped a 12 ton beam in Houston

Learning to trust the charts is like learning to read the directions on a medicine bottle - you think you know your limits until the numbers prove otherwise. It's funny how the most boring safety measures end up being the ones that save your skin.

Overheard a lead tech say "if you can't troubleshoot a bad crimp in under 10 minutes, you shouldn't be touching the plane"...

Wiggling every single wire like a noodle? That just gave me a flashback to a badly corroded trailer harness I fought with for almost an hour last fall. You'd bend one wire and nothing, bend another and the meter would flicker for half a second, then go dead again. Finally found a broken strand hidden right inside a rubber grommet where you couldn't even see it without peeling the insulation back. And that smell - once you get that burnt plastic smell in your nose it stays with you the rest of the day.

Switched from tarp to a lightweight tent after 5 years of hammock camping

Knew a buddy who made the same switch... he spent a whole season trying to dial in his tarp setup in the Pacific Northwest and just got tired of waking up damp all the time. He picked up a used Big Agnes Fly Creek off Craigslist for like eighty bucks and said it changed everything for him. Still sets it up in his backyard some nights just because it's so quick to pitch compared to fiddling with lines and stakes.

Rant: My sourdough starter went from amazing to dead in one weekend

Oh yeah that's actually a solid idea. I've heard of people doing that with finicky plants that get too cold or stressed. Just make sure the water is lukewarm not hot, you don't want to cook the roots. I'd let it sit for a bit then drain off the excess so it doesn't get waterlogged.
