Watched a guy in Nashville fix a blocked flue with a shop vac and a wire coat hanger

I was helping out at a job in Nashville last month, a old house off 12th Ave. The homeowner said smoke was backing up into the living room. Usually I'd break out the rods and brushes, but this older sweep I was shadowing just grabbed a shop vac and a bent coat hanger. He shoved the hanger up the flue to break up the big chunks of creosote while the vac sucked it all down. Took maybe 20 minutes and cleared a nasty blockage near the damper. I always thought you needed the full brush kit for every job, but that guy showed me a simpler way for those tight spots where brush rods just don't fit right. Has anyone else used a shop vac with a hose extension to pull debris out of a cold flue?

PSA: Old timer told me to always check the bonding jumper before troubleshooting a fault

Had a guy named Pete who's been doing avionics since the 80s tell me last month that 90% of intermittent fault issues are actually bonding or ground problems, not the box itself. I figured he was just being old school and blowing smoke. Then I spent three hours chasing a comm fault on a King KX 155 at the shop near Denver. Replaced antennas, checked wiring, even swapped the radio tray. Nothing worked. Finally gave in and checked the bonding jumper from the tray to the airframe. It was corroded and had like 2 ohms of resistance. Cleaned it up and the problem went away. Now I'm doing a bonding check on every single install before I touch anything else. Has anyone else had a fix that simple that they fought for way too long?

I think the Anthony Henday is way better than the Yellowhead for getting across town

Took the Yellowhead from 149 St to the Sherwood Park Freeway last Tuesday and hit five red lights in under 10 minutes. The Henday might be longer in distance but I'll take steady 100 km/h over stopping every 500 meters any day.

I overheard him muttering 'you're digging, not slicing' while I was prepping onions for service and now I realize I've been wasting speed and ruining my blade edge for the last 2 years - anyone else get called out by an old timer and had to relearn the basics?

The customer who asked for the manager because I said 'no problem' instead of 'you're welcome'

I work at a coffee shop in Portland and this lady last Tuesday actually demanded a refund because she said I was being rude by saying 'no problem' instead of 'you're welcome.' She told me it shows a lack of respect - has anyone else had customers get weirdly hung up on tiny word choices like that?

Serious question, why did I spend $80 on a fancy salt cellar

I saw this nice salt cellar at a kitchen store downtown and thought it would make my counter look pretty. Dude, it holds like half a cup of salt and I have a giant bag of kosher salt from Costco that I now have to scoop into this tiny dish every few days. It actually made cooking more annoying because I run out mid-recipe and have to refill it. Has anyone else bought something for your kitchen that just made your life harder instead of easier?

That one critique about my zipper placement really clicked

A local seamstress in Portland told me my zippers were always 1/4 inch off from the center seam, and I thought she was nitpicking. After I adjusted my next design on a denim jacket, the whole thing hung way better. Anyone else have a tiny fix that made a big difference?

The fountain at Oak Hollow Mall was bone dry by 2019

I went back to Oak Hollow Mall in Ohio last month, and that big fountain near the food court was completely empty with trash in the bottom. Back in 2015 when I was a kid, that thing was running strong with coins and kids throwing pennies in it. What killed these malls faster, the online shopping or the rent hikes?

Threw away $200 on a hydraulic jack that failed on my second use

Picked up a cheapo 12-ton jack from a surplus shop near the hangar, thought I was saving cash. First time I used it to lift a landing gear assembly, it started leaking fluid all over the floor after about 10 minutes. By the time I got it down, the seal blew and I had to borrow a proper one from a coworker. Has anyone else had a budget tool let them down like that?

Bought a cheap power stretcher off Amazon and it snapped on my third job

The handle just broke clean off while I was stretching a living room in a 4 bedroom house in Phoenix. Got through two rooms fine but the third one it gave out. Anyone else had luck with those $80 stretchers or should I just bite the bullet and get a Crain?

PSA: I switched from a standard lift bag to a double dump valve setup for salvage work.

I mean, I gotta disagree with that take @leo603, it feels like more than a minor tweak to me. The way it cuts down on manual stuff is pretty noticeable once you actually use it a few times rather than just looking at it on paper. Idk, maybe it's just me but I think the extra step is worth it for the end result.

Found a cool bullet journal display at the library in Cedar Rapids

Wait, hold on, a hand-drawn map of the library's floor plan? That's like... insane levels of detail I can't even imagine. I mean, I can barely sketch a straight line without it looking like a drunk spider walked across the page. It's wild to think someone sat there and color coded all the sections like a pro cartographer. That takes some serious patience and probably a ruler and a ton of tiny colored pens. I feel like I'd mess it up five minutes in and just scribble over everything. Idk, maybe it's just me but that feels like a whole different world of journaling.

Serious question, has anyone else tried a 'no-buy' month for specific items?

A no-buy is a solid move for sure, but for me that just made things worse. I’d get all restrictive and then binge harder when the month was up. Like I’d buy a whole set of those mini clay pots and never even open the glue. Ended up with three half-used sketchbooks and a bag of beads I still haven't sorted. The discipline part is key, but I need to figure out the why behind the buying, not just cut myself off cold.
