Been fighting a Trek road bike since last Tuesday where the rear derailleur cable keeps going slack after 10 miles. I was coming down this long descent outside of Asheville last summer, hauling pretty good around 35mph and hit this sharp left turn. Felt the rear end get real loose and then just that hissing sound you never want to hear. Tire burped and lost all air in maybe 2 seconds. Ended up sliding maybe 40 feet across the pavement, tore up my shorts and got some road rash but nothing broken. Walked the bike 3 miles to the nearest gas station and had to stuff a tube in there with no tire levers. Was using some cheap sealant I bought off Amazon and I swear it was like water. Anybody got a recommendation for a sealant that actually holds up in hot weather?
Had a day back in June where three tough jobs just fell into place. First was a 10 speed drivetrain swap on a Trek Domane that usually takes me 90 minutes. Customer showed up with the wrong cassette but I had the right one in my parts bin. Then a guy brought in a 1990s Cannondale with a seized seatpost that I got out in 20 minutes with a torch and a pipe wrench. Third thing was a wheel true on a bent rim that I thought was toast but it came back round after some tension work. Felt like I was reading the bike's mind. I know everyone loves aluminum rims for durability but my front rim cracked right at the spoke bed about 18 miles into a 40 mile ride near Maplewood Park. Tire blew out instantly and I almost went over the bars. I've been running these Velocity rims for about 3 years with no issues but people swear aluminum is bulletproof. Has anyone else had an aluminum rim fail like that on a long ride?
I recently swapped the cables on my 1987 Centurion and tried both the old-school long housing loops and the modern tight routing. The difference was night and day - the long loops felt soft and mushy, while the tight routing snapped into gear instantly (like a 30% improvement in crispness). Was rebuilding a dead e-bike battery for a customer. 36v 10ah pack. Used a cheap hair dryer instead of a heat gun. Too close, too hot. Melted through the wrap and shorted two cells. Spark show in my garage. Lesson learned: spend the $25 on a proper heat gun. Has anyone else botched a battery rebuild this bad?

Saw a guy at an Austin shop bring in a wheel that folded mid-ride because the quick release came loose under braking force... do you trust quick releases on disc brakes or have you switched to thru-axles exclusively? Has anyone else had a wheel come out on them like that?

I used to be one of those guys who said rim brakes were fine for road riding. Last spring I did a 100 mile ride up in the Shenandoah valley and it poured rain for 40 miles. Coming down a steep grade around mile 75 my rim brakes were barely grabbing, even with Kool Stop pads. I had to stop twice to dry off the rims with my shirt. That scared me enough to try a bike with disc brakes the next month. Now I run TRP cable discs on my commuter and I sleep better knowing I can stop in wet conditions. Last Saturday I needed to fix a wobble on my rear wheel before a group ride the next morning. My trueing stand is packed away in the back of my garage somewhere, so I figured I'd just use the frame with zip ties as reference points. After about an hour of frustration and making the wobble worse, I gave up and took it to a shop on Sunday morning. The mechanic there told me a zip tie on the frame can't compare to a proper stand with dial indicators, especially on a deeper rim. Has anyone else had a similar experience trying to skip the right tool for wheel work?
