Used a 3/8 inch backing plate on a 2 inch thick flange and it held for a week

Original rating was probably stamped right on the side in faded paint, half an inch from a rust hole. Bet it says something like "50 PSI max" when people are trying to push 150 through it. Modern engineers just look at the thread size and assume it can take whatever the new pump puts out. Saw a guy try to use a 1940s boiler valve on a modern system once. That thing was basically a hand grenade waiting to go off. Ever blown a gasket because you trusted a number that wasn't there?

Bought a fancy laser alignment tool for $700 and it paid for itself in one job

Yeah, those cheaper digital levels can be decent for basic stuff, but they don't hold a candle to a proper laser alignment kit for elevator work. The laser just cuts through all the guesswork, especially on longer runs where a level can drift. If you're planning to do this kind of job more than twice a year, it's worth the money. The time you save alone pays for it pretty quick.

That one Wednesday my whole flock decided to go rogue

Oh man, I've been there. That hiding spot you never knew existed is always the one they find at 10am when you have things to do. My girls once discovered a loose board in the side of the run I'd walked past a hundred times without noticing. I ended up doing the same thing with zip ties and scrap wood, but what really helped was going around the whole coop and run on my hands and knees looking for any gaps bigger than my fist. They'll find them. Also, pro tip - get a roll of that plastic poultry netting from the hardware store and just staple it over the base of your fence for a few inches. Keeps the little Houdinis from squeezing through and saves you from another round of chasing them through the neighbor's petunias.

Flare up caught me off guard at a comp in Kansas City

Man those flare ups will humble you fast but I scorched my whole forearm on a rib cook last fall and the meat turned out perfect too.

Rant: I thought working from a beach in Bali would be perfect, but it was a total mess

Had the exact same thing happen in Ubud. A $10 silicone keyboard cover and a matte screen protector saved my setup. Find a coworking spot with a pool instead of working on the sand.
