Warning: Found a huge dust bunny inside a server tower at a library in Springfield last week

I was called out to the main public library in Springfield last Thursday because one of their catalog servers kept overheating. When I popped the side panel off, I couldn't believe what I saw. There was a solid mat of dust and cat hair about an inch thick covering the entire CPU heatsink and the power supply fan. Looked like it had been building up for years, maybe five or six. I vacuumed it out carefully, replaced the thermal paste, and the temps dropped by 25 degrees. Has anyone else run into neglected public machines this bad, or was this just a unique case?

Shoutout to the guy who told me to ditch my Wacom for an iPad

Ngl, I thought he was just being a fanboy but after 6 months with Procreate I've cut my sketching time in half. That $400 iPad ended up saving me way more than the Cintiq ever did. Anyone else find a setup that totally changed their workflow?

Found out that a single cumulonimbus cloud can weigh as much as 100 elephants

I was scrolling through some weather science blog my buddy linked me to, and it said a typical thunderstorm cloud holds around 500,000 tons of water. That blew my mind because I always thought clouds were just this light fluffy stuff floating around. Been roofing for years and I look up at clouds every day, never realized each one has that much mass behind it. Has anyone else stumbled on a cloud fact that totally wrecked how you see them?

Hit page 300 and just couldn't keep going with that fantasy doorstop

I got through 300 pages of some epic fantasy series last month before I realized I didn't care about any of the seven kingdoms or their dumb prophecies lol. Has anyone else hit a specific page count where you just snap and put the book down forever?

TIL using hay instead of straw in the coop can cause serious health issues

I swapped to hay last month because it was cheaper, and my hens started having breathing problems after 3 days. The mold spores in hay are way worse than straw, learned that the hard way - has anyone else dealt with this?

My neighbor told me to switch to a rain barrel and I saved $40 on my water bill last month

Old lady Mrs. Gable said I was crazy for watering my garden from the hose during a drought, so I finally got a 50 gallon barrel from the hardware store and now my tomatoes are thrived without me paying extra, anyone else have a neighbor who was annoyingly right about something?

Can we talk about how I used to hammer cold steel like a fool

I spent 15 years just wailing on cold metal because I thought heating it up twice was a waste of time. Then last spring I was working on a set of fireplace tongs and a guy named Carl from the local guild watched me and said "you're just making more work for yourself." He was right, I stopped fighting the steel and started letting the heat do the heavy lifting... has anyone else had that "wait, I've been doing this wrong" moment?

That cheap burr grinder I bought took 3 months to realize it was ruining my coffee.

Oh man @emma349, you get it completely. Blade grinders are just dust makers in disguise. Ceramic burr hand grinders are the real game changer for sure.

Two years of renting coworking spaces before I realized hostels have better wifi

WAIT you NEVER even tested the speed?! I would have been running speed tests on day one just to prove to myself I wasnt crazy for spending all that cash. I had a similar thing happen in Buenos Aires where I paid for a "professional coworking" spot and the upload speed was 3mbps while the free hostel wifi down the street hit 50. You gotta check those numbers before you commit to paying, seriously.

Finally stopped using finish nails for baseboard returns after a guy in Denver showed me a better way

That older framer sounds like he knew what he was talking about... I was totally in the same boat for years, thought pins were just for trim that nobody would touch. Last week I had a tight spot in a corner where the 18 gauge kept making the wood crack on me. Switched to 23 gauge pins at a steep angle and it held just fine, barely any filler needed after. Really made me wonder why I was fighting with the bigger nails for so long. Pins are way easier to hide too, especially on stained stuff where you can't just fill with putty.
