Found a quote etched into a bench at Point Reyes and it wrecked me in the best way
I was hiking the Bear Valley Trail at Point Reyes last Saturday and stopped to rest on a weathered bench near the visitor center. Someone had carved a line from John Muir into the wood: "The mountains are calling and I must go." That quote gets tossed around on coffee mugs so much that I usually tune it out. But sitting there with sore legs at mile 8, surrounded by fog rolling off the coast, it hit differently. I realized I had been putting off this exact trip for almost 2 years because work always felt too busy. I finally hit 10 state parks this year, which is a small thing, but that bench pushed me to book the trip instead of just saving it to a list. What random spot has a quote that actually got through to you?
Got stuck on the same trail two winters back when the fog was so thick I couldn't see ten feet ahead. Sat down on a log to wait it out and some kid had scratched "you are here" into the wood with a pocket knife. Sounds dumb but I kept saying it in my head the whole walk back. Made me stop treating the hike like a checklist and just look at where I was standing. Booked a campsite that night instead of driving home early.
