Sure, there was some real route-finding and a scary boulder field, but the views from Texas Pass were like nothing I've ever seen. The sense of being way up there, completely away from any marked trail, was totally new for me. It wasn't a walk in the park, but it was way more doable than I built up in my head. Now I get why people are so into these off-trail routes. Has anyone else done a section and found it less intimidating than expected?

About two years back, a regular, a guy who races cross, brought in a wheel I'd just trued. He said it felt stiff and 'dead' on the trail, that I'd probably over-tensioned the spokes chasing perfect lateral truth. He was right. I was so focused on getting that rim to run straight with no wobble that I was cranking spokes way past where they needed to be, making the whole wheel a tense, harsh ride. I started focusing more on getting a good, even 'ping' sound from each spoke and checking for roundness first, letting the lateral truth come last with lighter adjustments. The wheels feel livelier now and I haven't had a comeback for a broken spoke since. Has anyone else had a client point out a bad habit you didn't even know you had?

Everyone says you need a 5mm thickness for a basic tumbler, but I've been making them at 3mm for years

I keep seeing new folks at the studio in Asheville get told they'll get cracks if they go under 5mm, but that's just not true if you know how to manage your heat. I've sold over 200 pieces at 3mm and only had one come back, and that was from a drop. The extra weight just isn't needed for most daily use pieces. Has anyone else found they can go thinner without issues if they're careful?

Honestly, I was in line at the Safeway on 5th and he was telling his buddy about this fancy dinner. Tbh, it just made me think about how I can make a whole pot of chili for my family for less than that one piece of meat. I grabbed a can of beans and some ground turkey instead and felt way better.
