Stop blaming your scanner for light leaks that aren't there

I've seen three posts this week where people showed off their 'vintage light leak' scans, but zoom in and it's clearly dust on the neg or a cheap flatbed not sealing right. If you can't match the leak pattern to the sprocket holes or the film gate, you're just embracing bad technique. How long do you actually check your negatives before you blame the camera?

Still using a paper map book in my car from 2018

I keep a Rand McNally road atlas under my passenger seat that I bought for $12 at a gas station near Flagstaff. When my phone died on a trip to see my aunt in rural Oregon last fall, I just flipped to page 64 and found a back road that bypassed a construction zone. Now I check the atlas before heading out somewhere new - it shows forest service roads and old routes that Google Maps just skips. My coworkers think I'm crazy for keeping it, but it never loses signal or runs out of battery. Anyone else still stash an analog map in their vehicle for emergencies?

Spent 6 hours tracking a ground fault on a CRJ-700 that turned out to be a single bad pin

Last month I had a plane throwing intermittent bus failure codes. Checked all the usual suspects, swapped 3 modules, even rewired a connector. Pulled my hair out from 8 AM to 2 PM before I found it. It was a pin in a cannon plug that looked fine but wasn't making contact under vibration. Has anyone else had a ghost fault that took way longer to find than it should have?

Found out my filler was fish-eyeing because of wax on the panel

Spent like 3 hours sanding and redoing a repair on a 2018 F-150 bumper. Then my buddy asked if I wiped it down with wax remover first. Felt pretty dumb but now I always hit it with a grease and wax remover before any filler. Anyone else skip that step starting out?

Unpopular opinion: abridging classics is worse than just skipping them entirely

My book club tried reading the full Moby Dick last month and after 3 weeks only 2 of 8 members finished it. The rest of us grabbed an abridged version to catch up and it completely lost the feel of the book. Now half the group thinks we should just pick shorter books instead of gutting long ones. Any other clubs run into this divide between reading full vs abridged versions?

My brush head snapped off mid-sweep on a job in Trenton yesterday

I was about 30 feet up on a 2-story colonial when the wire brush head just separated from the rod. Lucky I had a second rod in the truck or I'd have been stuck. Anyone had this happen with a cheaper brush? Thinking about upgrading to a poly head instead.

Old school PVA vs modern flexible glues - a bookbinder at the Seattle Public Library swap changed my mind last weekend.

He told me he's been using the same batch of methylcellulose since 2019 and his spines outlast anything I've made with Lineco PVA. Do you stick with what you know or try new adhesives when you hear a convincing argument like that?

Forgot to ground a drop in a rainstorm and learned my lesson quick

I was up on a roof in Austin last Tuesday, running a new line for a customer. Storm rolled in faster than I expected, and I got lazy and skipped putting my ground block on before the rain hit. Ended up with a bad ground loop that killed the signal on three rooms. Had to go back Thursday and redo the whole run with a proper ground bond. It cost me 2 extra hours and I felt dumb the whole time. Has anyone else gotten burned by skipping a ground in bad weather?

I found a 1960s guide to building your own fallout shelter at a thrift store in Tulsa

Snagged this weird old book at a Goodwill off Route 66 last Saturday for like $2. It's called 'How to Build a Fallout Shelter' from 1961 and it's packed with diagrams for digging into your backyard and stacking concrete blocks. The author was dead serious about stocking canned food and a hand-crank radio too. I flipped to the part about ventilation systems and realized I'd have no clue how to actually make that work without suffocating. The cover has this retro atomic age graphic that just screams cold war panic. Has anyone else stumbled across one of these old survival manuals? I'm debating whether to keep it for the kitsch value or try to sell it to a vintage decor person.

Blew $60 on a custom coiled cable that clashes with my desk mat

Ordered a nice blue and white cable from a builder on Etsy last week, got it yesterday, and it looks ridiculous paired with my dark gray desk mat and orange keycaps, so now I'm trying to figure out if I should swap the cable or just buy a new desk mat has anyone else dealt with this kind of color mismatch after going all in on a build?
