Unpopular opinion: abridging classics is worse than just skipping them entirely

My book club tried reading the full Moby Dick last month and after 3 weeks only 2 of 8 members finished it. The rest of us grabbed an abridged version to catch up and it completely lost the feel of the book. Now half the group thinks we should just pick shorter books instead of gutting long ones. Any other clubs run into this divide between reading full vs abridged versions?

Hit 50 books read this year and it totally snuck up on me

I run a small book club with 3 other moms in my neighborhood. We set a group goal of reading 12 books this year, nothing crazy. Then last week I was updating my reading journal and realized I personally hit 50 books. That includes 14 romance novels, 2 non-fiction history books, and the rest mystery thrillers we picked as a group. Has anyone else blown past a milestone way faster than they expected?

That debate in my book club about unreliable narrators hit different after my talk with Dave

My buddy Dave from work said he stopped reading a book because the narrator was a liar. I told him that's the whole point of some stories. He said it felt like the author was tricking him, not the character. It made me realize how some people just want a straight story and that's okay too. My book club fights about this every time. Last month I got tired of guessing where a thriller was headed, so I flipped to the last chapter after page 50. I always thought sticky notes were just for offices until I misplaced my page for the third time in one chapter. I grabbed a yellow sticky note and it stayed put, plus I can jot down page numbers for referencing a debate point later.
