inThat week on the Columbia River when the pump just wouldn't prime
Totally get where @riley_ramirez81 is coming from, but a soap test before you even start the pump can miss leaks that only show up under pressure. You need to test while the system is running too. A tiny crack can stay closed until the line pressurizes and flexes. We do a soap check on the fittings at rest, then run the pump and hit all the hoses and connections again. That double check catches the ones that pop open under load.

inI used to think a balcony garden was a bad idea for my windy spot
Ugh, that wind is brutal. Your cinder block fix is actually pretty smart. Maybe try some of those heavy duty plant velcro straps too, they help a lot.

inI spent two years photographing dead malls thinking it was about the decay, but a security guard in Dayton told me I was missing the whole point.
Wait, you're telling me the guard actually gave a reason? The guy at the mall last week told me I couldn't cut through the closed-off hallway, and when I asked why, he just shrugged and said "policy." No explanation, nothing. It drives me up the wall when they won't even try to tell you the point. Did yours at least have a good excuse?

inBought a fancy laser level for rigging, total waste of cash
Honestly, it can be that bad. We had the same issue with a new level on a site near a busy road. Every time a big truck rolled by, the dot would dance all over the studs. We ended up having to move it to an interior wall away from any traffic. It was fine for layout after that, but you're right, maybe some units just can't handle that kind of shake.
