I spent two years photographing dead malls thinking it was about the decay, but a security guard in Dayton told me I was missing the whole point.

So what did the guard say the point actually was?

Wait, you're telling me the guard actually gave a reason? The guy at the mall last week told me I couldn't cut through the closed-off hallway, and when I asked why, he just shrugged and said "policy." No explanation, nothing. It drives me up the wall when they won't even try to tell you the point. Did yours at least have a good excuse?

Just ask them straight up next time. They usually have a simple reason, like a safety rule or a manager's order. Arguing never works, but asking politely why the rule exists sometimes gets you a real answer. Saves everyone time and hassle.
