Before you give up on it completely, check the boardgamegeek forums for player aids or rewritten rules, sometimes the community does a better job than the actual publisher.

Honestly I think you're reading way too deep into a kids book. lol It's not that serious. The author literally said the ending was meant to be open to interpretation and the sled thing is just one of like a million theories people have. I remember reading it in middle school and just thought it was a weird way to end a book. Like wow a sled hill so deep. Not everything needs to be some big symbolic death metaphor. Sometimes a vague ending is just a lazy ending.
