The guy who sold me a bear canister at 9pm outside Yosemite
Stopped at a gas station near the park entrance last summer because I realized I forgot mine at home. This older guy in a beat up truck offered to sell me his spare for $60. He spent 15 minutes showing me how to latch it, told me about a spot where a bear popped his old one open like a soda can. I thought he was just trying to justify the price. That night I hung it 100 yards from camp. Next morning I saw claw marks all over it, deep gouges. The latch held. I never got his name but I think about that warning every time I camp now. Has anyone else had a stranger's gear tip turn out to be way more real than they expected?
Whoa, he popped it open like a soda can?? That image alone would've made me double check my latch ten times before bed. Deep gouges and it still held is wild, that guy clearly knew what he was talking about.
