Just compared stacking 100 vs 500 frames on my Jupiter shot and it's not even close

I spent two nights last week trying to get a decent image of Jupiter with my 8-inch scope. The first night, I only captured about 100 frames because I was tired and called it early. The second night, I pushed myself to get 500 frames. I stacked both sets in AutoStakkert and the difference is massive. The 100-frame stack looks noisy and soft, like a fuzzy orange ball. The 500-frame stack actually shows the Great Red Spot and some banding detail. It took longer to process, sure, but the extra data smooths out the atmospheric distortion so much better. I used to think more frames was just a minor improvement, but now I see it's the key to pulling out real detail. Has anyone else found a specific number of frames where the quality really jumps for planetary imaging?

Had to pick between cedar and composite for a big job in Boise

The client wanted a fence that looked good but needed almost no care. I was stuck between real cedar and a composite board I had not used before. I went with the composite because the price was close and the warranty was 25 years. It went up fast, but the hidden clips were a pain to line up on the first section. Anyone have a trick for keeping those composite rail clips straight before you screw them in?

Why does nobody talk about the difference between a 3/8 and a 1/2 inch mortar joint on a chimney?

I built two identical chimneys for a client in Boise, one with each size, and the 3/8 joint cracked within a year while the 1/2 inch is still solid. What's your go-to joint size for freeze-thaw areas?

Ran into a guy at the Edmonton Public Library who said the city's chat forums are all dead now

I was looking for a local board game group last Tuesday and this older guy at the computer bank next to me saw my screen. He leaned over and said, 'You won't find anyone real on those anymore, they all moved to Facebook.' I argued that some of the smaller, topic-specific forums still have good threads. He just shook his head and said the community feel is gone. Has anyone else found a decent local chat spot that isn't just Facebook groups?

Finally caved and bought a $300 thermal camera for my phone

I mean, I always thought it was a cool toy but not really needed for our work. Had a call last week where a homeowner swore their motion sensor was tripping randomly at night. Spent like two hours checking wiring and alignment, nothing. Pulled out the thermal cam and spotted a tiny heat signature right above the sensor. Turns out it was a hot water pipe in the wall that had a small leak, heating up the drywall just enough to trigger the PIR. Fixed the pipe, sensor works perfect now. Anyone else found a weird use for a tool you bought on a whim?

I finally saw why everyone talks about that salvage job in Mobile Bay

We were pulling up a sunken barge section last fall, water was super murky with maybe 2 feet of vis. My old habit was to just feel my way along, but the lead diver had us run a taut line from the crane hook to the wreck as a hard guide. We got the lift point rigged in under an hour, which would've taken me half a day of fumbling before. Now I keep a spool of that bright orange poly line in my bag for any low-vis work. What's your go-to trick when you can't see your hand in front of your face?

He was right, I was just bundling everything together for speed on a Cessna 172's autopilot install. Now I spend the extra 20 minutes per run using proper clamps and loom, and it's way cleaner for the next guy. How much extra time do you all budget for 'future tech' accessibility on a job?
