Ran into a guy at the Edmonton Public Library who said the city's chat forums are all dead now

I was looking for a local board game group last Tuesday and this older guy at the computer bank next to me saw my screen. He leaned over and said, 'You won't find anyone real on those anymore, they all moved to Facebook.' I argued that some of the smaller, topic-specific forums still have good threads. He just shook his head and said the community feel is gone. Has anyone else found a decent local chat spot that isn't just Facebook groups?

Totally get what that guy means. Tried finding a running buddy on a local forum last month and it was just tumbleweeds. The Facebook groups are where people post now, but the threads get buried so fast you miss everything. It feels like shouting into a crowded room instead of having an actual talk. Really miss how forums used to have those ongoing conversations you could just jump back into.

Check out the local subreddit for Edmonton. It's not a classic forum but it has that same feel of longer posts and real replies. People post about lost pets, ask for restaurant tips, and organize meetups. The threads stick around and you can search them. It's the only place I've found online that still has that neighborhood bulletin board vibe without the chaos of a Facebook feed.

I mean, the local subreddit is okay but it still feels so big and random. What I miss are those tiny forums where you'd actually recognize usernames after a while, you know? Like, did that guy at the library mention if there was one specific forum that used to be good before it died?
