I finally switched from a standard 10-inch trowel to a 12-inch Marshalltown for big block work

For years I stuck with my old 10-inch, thinking the bigger one would be too heavy. Tried a coworker's 12-inch on a foundation job in Dayton last month and it was a game changer for spreading mortar on those 8-inch blocks. My wrist doesn't ache at the end of the day now. Anyone else made a simple tool switch that saved you a bunch of strain?

A bear in Yosemite taught me to stop trusting cheap coolers

I was camping at Upper Pines last fall with what I thought was a decent budget cooler. It was one of those $40 ones from a big box store, and I figured it was fine for a weekend. We put all our food in it, locked the latches, and went to bed. Around 2 AM, we heard this awful scraping and banging. A black bear had gotten the lid open in maybe two minutes flat. It wasn't even trying hard, just kind of popped it with its claws. We yelled and it ran off, but it ate all our bacon and crushed the lid. The ranger came by the next morning, took one look at the busted plastic, and said, 'Yeah, those don't count as bear-resistant. You got lucky.' Now I'm saving up for a proper rotomolded one. Has anyone else had a cooler fail on them in a big way?

A comment from an old guy in Topeka made me rethink post holes.

I was setting a line of cedar posts for a ranch fence, using my power auger and going about 30 inches deep. This retired farmer, Mr. Jenkins, watched for a minute and said, 'You're digging them too neat. The sides are like glass.' He told me to rough up the sides of the hole with my shovel after augering, so the concrete can grip better and stop frost heave. I started doing that on every job north of I-70 and haven't had a single post shift since. Anyone else pick up a simple trick like that from an old timer?

Went to the art museum downtown and the security guard's uniform was a whole mood

I was at the city art museum yesterday, and I couldn't stop staring at the guard's jacket. It was this deep green wool blend with these subtle, raised seams that looked like brushstrokes.
