Warning: a ranger in Yosemite told me I was planning my trip all wrong

I was at the visitor center last Friday, all excited to show him my 4-day loop near Cathedral Lakes. He looked at my map and just said, 'You're going to hate that third day. It's a 14-mile slog with zero water and you'll be facing the sun the whole time.' I'd only looked at the miles, not the actual trail details. He sketched out a different route on the back of a pamphlet that added a lake stop right in the middle. Has anyone else had a ranger totally save their trip from being miserable?

My dad warned me about using cheap spackle on a drywall patch

He said the $2 stuff from the bargain bin would shrink and crack, but I figured it was fine for a small hole. Sure enough, after two days it looked like a spiderweb and I had to redo the whole thing with the good compound. What's the one piece of DIY advice you got that you wish you'd listened to right away?

Just looked at my old work log and saw I've cut over 10,000 pieces of glass

I was cleaning out my truck and found my first logbook from when I started my own shop. I flipped through and added up the jobs from just the first three years. The number hit me because I remember how nervous I was cutting my first few panes for a bathroom window. Now, after fifteen years, that many cuts means I've probably handled miles of glass. It's wild to think about all those windows and doors. Anyone else ever add up their old work and get a surprise like that?

Rant: I thought those fancy $30 stencils were a total waste of money

Honestly, I saw them online for months and refused to buy one, thinking I could just draw everything freehand. Tbh, my monthly calendar headers always looked messy and took forever. I finally caved and got a basic one from a shop called Archer & Olive about two months ago. Ngl, it cut my setup time in half and my pages look way cleaner. Has anyone else had a tool they hated on that actually saved their butt?

A client in Denver told me my shellac finish looked 'plastic' and it made me switch to a 2lb cut.

I was using a 3lb cut for years, but that one comment made me realize it was too thick and shiny. Has anyone else had a finish called out for looking fake?

Tbh, that 'no power' diagnosis on a 2018 MacBook Air took me 3 hours

Turns out it was just a tiny piece of conductive foam stuck under the logic board from a previous repair, not the DC-in board I replaced first. Anyone else had a weird debris issue cause a major headache?

I dropped about $40 on a basic OBD2 scanner from Harbor Freight, thinking it was junk. It found a weird transmission code on a Ford Escape last week that my fancy tool missed. Anyone else have a go-to cheap tool that actually works?

Just realized everyone at my place keeps ignoring the tool offset wear comp

I mean, they'll dial in a new insert perfect then run 500 parts without touching it. Saw a 0.015" drift on a stainless job last week that scrapped a whole batch. How often do you guys actually check and adjust yours during a run?
