The client who asked for 'sunset hair' and brought in a picture of a literal sunset

This was about three weeks ago at my station in the Riverside Salon. She wanted the exact colors from a photo she took at the beach, which meant blending like five different oranges and pinks. The before and after was wild (her hair was a level 5 brown before) and it took me almost four hours with a color melt and a ton of foils. Has anyone else had a client bring in a picture of something that's not hair?

A guy at a coffee shop saw my bullet journal and asked if it was a 'work thing'

I was at a local spot in Austin last week, just setting up my weekly spread with a simple pen. A guy at the next table leaned over and asked, 'Is that a work thing? It looks so neat.' I told him it was my bullet journal, my way of keeping track of everything from grocery lists to big ideas. He got quiet for a second and then said, 'I just use my phone for that. Isn't it faster?' I explained that for me, the act of writing it down helps me remember and actually do the things. He nodded but still looked a bit confused. It made me think about how the system can look pointless from the outside. Has anyone else had a chat like this where you had to explain the 'why' behind the physical book?

Rant: I read that some old foundries in Pittsburgh used to pour iron at 2800 degrees Fahrenheit without any modern safety gear

I was looking up some history on steel towns and stumbled on a photo essay about the Homestead Works. The caption said guys would work right next to the open hearth furnaces in just heavy wool clothes and leather aprons. No face shields like we have now, just maybe some smoked glasses. It's wild to think about the risk they took every day. Do you think we've gotten too cautious with PPE, or were they just insanely tough back then?

Crushed concrete from old slabs made our last pour cheaper and greener

I've been trying out using crushed concrete from old jobs in new mixes. It means less stuff goes to the dump and we don't need as much new rock. We used it on a driveway last month, and the finish was just as smooth. I mean, we had to add a little more water, but it was no big deal. Maybe it's just me, but cutting down on waste makes the job feel better. The customer liked that it was cheaper too. Give it a shot if you can get your hands on some old concrete.

Can we talk about mixing post materials in a fence?

I mixed metal and wood posts to save money on a job last month. After heavy rain, the wood ones moved but the metal stayed put. Now the fence line is all crooked. Some guys say never mix materials, others say it works if you brace it right. What's your take on this?
