Rant: a dispatcher in Newark told me to skip the damage photos, and that still bugs me
I overheard a dispatcher on a call last week say "just skip the walkaround photos, they slow us down" and it has been eating at me since. How many people get stuck with $800 in bumper damage because they took that advice and signed off without a record? If you have ever picked up a car with no photos on file, I want to hear how it ended.
Devil's advocate here, but the dispatcher might not be totally wrong. In my experience the walkaround photos are mostly for the rental company's protection, not yours, and if you already have your own phone pics of the car before you drive off, you are covered either way. Photos on file usually only capture one angle anyway, so people lean on them and skip their own inspection, which is worse. Your mileage may vary by branch, but a quick video on your own phone takes 30 seconds and beats whatever the counter guy snapped. Take the dispatcher's advice with a grain of salt, but the real lesson is to always document it yourself no matter what anyone tells you.
