I was at Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania last fall, trying to get a shot of the Milky Way with my old DSLR. I mean, I'd watched a bunch of videos, but my photos kept coming out just a dark, grainy mess, you know? This guy named Mark, who was set up near me, saw me getting frustrated and just walked over. He didn't make a big deal about it, just said 'mind if I take a look?' and spent maybe ten minutes showing me his exact setup. He had me set my ISO to 3200, my aperture as wide as it would go, and a 20 second exposure. Idk, maybe it's just me, but seeing those numbers on my own screen, right there in the dark with the actual sky above us, just clicked. I got a decent shot that night, not perfect, but it had real stars. Has anyone else had a simple tip from a stranger totally change how you shoot?

PSA: I saw a tomato plant in a coffee can on a fire escape in Brooklyn and it blew my mind

I was visiting a friend last month and her neighbor had a huge cherry tomato plant growing in a big metal coffee can, just sitting on the rusty fire escape. It was loaded with fruit. I always thought you needed a big, fancy planter box for tomatoes. She told me she just pokes extra holes in the bottom and feeds it with leftover coffee grounds. I've been overcomplicating my whole setup. Has anyone else had success with tomatoes in weird containers?

Every morning on my run, I pass three mailboxes that are always getting hit by cars backing out. Talking to the owners, they said the repairs are cheap but never last because the underlying support is bent. It hit me that for small hits, checking the mounting points is just as key as fixing the visible damage. Now I always double-check that on any fender-bender job.

I went hiking over the weekend and was sure I found a bunch of quartz, but when I got home and looked closer, half of it was actually calcite. I guess I was just seeing white crystals and getting excited. I tried the scratch test with a penny, and that's when I figured it out. It's a bit of a letdown, but now I want to get better at telling them apart on the spot. Does anyone have a simple trick they use in the field to tell quartz from calcite without carrying a whole kit? I really want to avoid filling my pack with the wrong rocks next time.

My scans keep coming out with a weird pink color cast

I developed my first roll of color film at home last weekend. The negatives look okay to my eye, but when I scan them, everything has a strong pink tint. I'm using a flatbed scanner with the default software settings. Has anyone else run into this and know how to fix the colors?
