PSA: The dented mailboxes on my route explain a lot about low-speed collisions.

Every morning on my run, I pass three mailboxes that are always getting hit by cars backing out. Talking to the owners, they said the repairs are cheap but never last because the underlying support is bent. It hit me that for small hits, checking the mounting points is just as key as fixing the visible damage. Now I always double-check that on any fender-bender job.

That's such a good point about looking past the obvious damage. It reminds me of car bumpers that look fine but have cracked brackets behind them. People always focus on the big dent or scratch, but the real problem is usually what's holding everything together. A quick look at the mounts can save so much hassle and money down the road. Your mailbox example is the perfect way to explain it to someone.

My old landlord always checked the basement pipes after a storm, even if nothing leaked upstairs. It's the same idea with your car bumper story. We skip the hidden stuff because it's not right in front of us. Like when my phone battery puffed up but the screen seemed fine, the real danger was inside. This happens all over, from ignoring weird body pains to putting off fixing a loose floorboard.

Exactly. The bracket is the whole story. Fixed a taillight once that kept rattling loose. The plastic lens was fine, but the mounting tabs on the car body were snapped. A five dollar part caused a hundred dollar headache because we just glued the light back on three times.
