At the family diner I worked at in college, we had a spinning wheel of paper tickets for the waitlist. It was a mess when we got busy, tickets would fall off. The new owner swapped it for one cheap tablet with a basic waitlist app. The difference was night and day, no more lost names or arguments about who was next. I was reading an old article on a local history site about my town's main street. It said the brick paving was put down in 1923, but they used over 200,000 bricks from a factory that closed in 1919. I always thought the bricks were newer. It made me wonder how they stored them for four years before the project. Has anyone else found a small detail that changed how you see something common?

The difference in my hands after switching to that new synthetic grease

Used to use that old petroleum-based stuff for years. My hands would be cracked and raw by Friday, especially in winter. Switched to that new synthetic brand, the one in the blue tube, about six months ago. The change was crazy. No more skin splitting around my thumbs when I'm working on a tight helicoid. I can actually feel the tiny detents on aperture rings now. It's like my fingertips got their sensitivity back. I don't even need that heavy lotion anymore. Anyone else notice a big difference with their gear after changing one small thing like a lubricant?

Shoutout to the spring that launched itself into my ceiling fan

I was reassembling a 1911 mainspring housing last night and the cap slipped, sending the spring flying into the spinning fan blade with a loud 'ping'. Anyone have a good method for keeping that cap in place during assembly?

TIL my local nursery had two types of lavender, and I had to pick one for my window box.

The choice was between English lavender, which is hardy for our zone 5 winters, and French lavender, which has those pretty little 'rabbit ear' flowers but might not survive a freeze. I went with the English type, and it's already starting to smell amazing on my sunny kitchen windowsill. Has anyone here tried growing French lavender in a colder climate and had it come back?
