Went with the 1/8 rod on a 3/8 fillet and my inspector gave me a look
I had a small vessel job over in Corpus back in March and I stood there for ten minutes trying to pick between running 1/8 rod or 3/32 on a 3/8 fillet. Most of the old hands on that crew swore by the 3/32 for control on the thinner shell, but I went with the 1/8 because I wanted the fill done before lunch and I was tired of tying in every two inches. The first pass looked real pretty, I'm not gonna lie. Then I got to the second side and started chasing a slight undercut around the saddle, and by the time I cleaned it up I'd spent more time grinding than I saved on the fill. The inspector flagged one spot on the toe and just kind of tilted his head at me, which honestly hurt more than a write up would have. We ended up reworking about three feet of it. Now I keep both sizes in the pouch and I actually look at the fit up before I decide instead of just grabbing whatever's on top. Curious what size you all are running on a 3/8 fillet with a tight fit, and whether the fit up changes it for you.
