Gave up on 3 different books at page 50 last winter after tracking every single one
I started keeping a little note on my phone last December about why I put books down, and the number that jumped out at me was 50. Out of 11 books I quit over that stretch, 7 of them died right around page 50, like clockwork. I showed the list to a friend who works at a library in Columbus and she said that tracks with what she sees, since most people never make it past the first chunk. The weird part is it is never the writing that stops me, it is always some side character getting introduced who I can tell is going to eat up 80 pages. So now I just bail the second that happens instead of pretending I will push through. Does anyone else notice they quit at the same page number every time, or is it just me?
