My book club in Portland had a huge fight about the ending of 'The Road'

This guy, Mark, got so mad about the ambiguous ending that he stood up and yelled, 'If the boy dies, the whole book is pointless!' right in the middle of the cafe. We had to calm him down while the barista gave us the side-eye for like five minutes straight. Has your group ever had a meltdown over an author's choice like that?

Spent a whole weekend trying to get my head around a French groove

I was binding a small journal and the groove just wouldn't form cleanly, always tearing the covering material. It took me three days of fiddling with bone folder pressure and board thickness to get it right. What's your method for a crisp, clean groove?

I read that some of the oldest sourdough starters in the US are kept in jail

I was looking up stuff on old sourdough cultures last week and came across a fact that made me laugh. Apparently, the San Francisco Boudin Bakery has a starter they call 'Mother Dough' that dates back to 1849, which is wild enough. But then I read that some prisons, like the one in Monroe, Washington, have kept their own starters going for decades because it's cheap and reliable. The idea of a sourdough starter being a prized inmate in a prison kitchen is just so funny to me. I picture guards doing a headcount on the crocks. It makes sense when you think about the constant feeding schedule fitting into a rigid routine. Has anyone else run into a starter kept in a really weird or strict place like that?

Question about taking a big project for less money versus a small one for more

Last year, I had to choose between a six month website build for a local non-profit at $30 an hour or a two week logo design rush job for a tech startup at $75 an hour. I picked the logo job for the higher rate because I needed cash fast. It was stressful but paid my rent for two months. Has anyone else faced a choice between a long-term, lower-paying gig and a short, high-paying one? How did you decide?

My childhood street sign swap that nobody remembers

I always brushed off the idea of reality glitches until I dug up an old family photo from the 90s. It clearly shows the sign on my street corner as bright green, but I swear it was blue my whole childhood. Everyone I asked from back then says it was always blue, which really messed with my head. I used to think these stories were just bad memory or folks making things up. Now, after staring at that photo for days, I'm totally convinced something shifted. It's weird how we used to laugh off these small details as nothing. But now, with places like this to talk about it, I see how common these slips might be. That green sign in the photo feels like a peek behind the curtain of normal life.
