Saw a guy in New Bedford hand-cutting dovetails on a bench with no vise, and I stood there for 20 minutes
Went to a boatyard up in New Bedford last Saturday to pick up some cypress offcuts for a shelf job. An old guy was cutting dovetails on a plank propped on two sawhorses, no vise, just sitting on it with his hip. He had maybe 40 pins laid out in pencil and he hit every line dead on with a $30 Japanese pull saw, no jig. I asked how long he'd been at it and he said 51 years, then handed me the saw and let me try three. Has anyone else seen guys work without a bench like that, and do you bother trying to copy it or just keep your vise?
