Just got a retainer refund after 6 months of chasing

Tbh I hired a local lawyer in Austin for a lease dispute and paid a $2,000 retainer. After the case settled in 2 months, they kept the leftover $700 for 'administrative costs' with zero itemization. I sent a polite but firm email every Friday for 6 weeks, then finally threatened to file a bar complaint. They cut me a check in 4 days. Has anyone else had to fight for unearned retainer money?

Sat in on a mediation in Tulsa last Tuesday and the mediator pulled up this giant cost-of-litigation spreadsheet, showing how 8 months of discovery would eat more than the settlement offer. I always figured fighting it out was the principle thing, but seeing the math laid out with real dollar amounts changed my mind. Anyone else had a mediator actually break down numbers like that?

Last Tuesday I had to dig up a 2009 contract from a closed case and the local courthouse's microfilm machine broke while I was using it. The clerk told me they switched to digital scans last month but half the older records haven't been uploaded yet. That $450 flat fee for a simple eviction felt like a scam

My landlord charged me $450 to have his lawyer file an eviction notice, but I handled all the tenant communication myself and the tenant left within 5 days. The lawyer literally just emailed a PDF and showed up to one hearing where nobody contested anything. Paid $2,400 to a solo lawyer and got a paralegal's worth of work

I hired this local guy in Austin for a simple will and trust... he charged me $2,400 and then had his assistant do all the typing while he spent maybe 20 minutes total on a call with me. Took him six weeks to send a draft that had my mom's name spelled wrong. When I asked for a revision he acted like I was being picky. I get that small firm people are cheaper than big ones, but that doesn't mean they can slack. Has anyone else paid premium money for what felt like a handoff job? How do you check what the lawyer actually does before you sign the retainer?
