Why did nobody tell me I was using my caulk gun wrong for 4 years?

I had the exact same thing happen with a putty knife. Used it flat for years, then a painter buddy told me to flex it and hold it at an angle. Night and day difference on spackle jobs, especially the big gaps. Once I stopped jamming it straight on, the finish was way smoother and I didn't have to sand as much. Sometimes you just need someone to point out the obvious thing you've been missing.

Hit 300 remote desktop sessions last month and it caught me off guard

Bet those 40 hardware issues had the longest call times by far.

My sister's comment about my "subscription budget" actually made me rethink everything

Honestly @grantnelson I get why you feel that way but I actually don't mind subscriptions that much. For stuff like Netflix or Spotify I'm paying a small amount each month instead of dropping a ton upfront for stuff I'll barely use. Tbh the real trick is just being honest with yourself about what you actually watch.

Serious question: is fine-tuning open source models actually worth the hardware cost?

Wait, wait, wait - are you saying fine-tuning is totally useless? I mean, I get that RAG works great for pulling specific data from documents, but what about when you need a model to actually change its behavior for a specific task? Like, say you want it to always write in a certain tone for customer support. Prompting can only do so much before you hit a wall. RAG is amazing for knowledge retrieval, but fine-tuning teaches the model the right way to think. Has anyone actually tried fine-tuning a small model for a narrow task and seen it fail?

Tried baking bread in my great grandma's cracked mixing bowl and it actually turned out better

i mean, is it really that deep though lol like it's a cracked bowl not some ancient artifact with mystical bread powers
