My neighbor told me to skip the gravel base for my shed, and I'm glad I didn't listen

He insisted a few pavers on the dirt would be fine for my 8x10 shed. I went with a full 4-inch compacted gravel base instead, and after two Michigan winters, it hasn't moved an inch. Anyone else get bad advice they're happy they ignored?

Totally get that. I used to think you needed to be a full-on mountaineer for that stuff. Then I did a weekend in the southern Sierra cross-country and it just CLICKED. The freedom of picking your own line over a pass is a totally different feeling than just following a trail.

Honestly, that's the best kind of failure. It's like appliances develop their own little personalities right before they die. My old dryer started humming the first few notes of "Shave and a Haircut" every time the cycle ended. It's weirdly comforting, like they're putting on one last show for you.
