Last week my 2008 iPod classic suddenly played all 5 days without a single skip or crash

I use it every morning on the bus to work and it normally freezes at least once a week. Has anyone else had a weirdly perfect run with an old device that made you hold onto it longer?

Why do people keep booking through third party sites for flights?

I was at a travel meetup in Denver last night and someone mentioned they saved $12 on a flight to Portland by using a sketchy reseller, but then got stuck with no refund when the flight got canceled. I've seen this happen like 5 times this year alone, people chasing tiny savings and ending up paying way more in hidden fees or lost tickets. Has anyone else noticed this trend and do you actually trust those sites over booking direct with the airline?

Found out my dad's old Pentax K1000 has a shutter count limit of around 100,000 actuations after 40 years of use

I was reading a repair blog from a guy in Portland and he said most mechanical shutters from that era just wear out around that number, so now I'm scared to even fire mine off at a family picnic.

Walked into a hardware store in Nashville last week and noticed something weird with caulk prices

I needed some silicone caulk for a bathroom reno and the price tags were all over the place. A regular DAP tube was $4.50 but then the same brand with 'mold resistant' on it was almost $12. I stood there reading labels for like 10 minutes trying to figure out if it was really worth the extra money. Turns out the expensive stuff has a higher solids content so it lasts longer but who knew that? Has anyone actually tested both side by side and noticed a real difference?

I finally caught why my MAL ratings were all over the place

So I've been rating anime on MyAnimeList for like 3 years now. Last week I looked back at my list and noticed I gave shows like 8s and 9s but then the same score to stuff I barely remembered. The tipping point was when I rated a random filler season the same as Steins;Gate. Turns out I was just rating based on how I felt in the moment instead of actually comparing them to each other. Has anyone else had to go back and redo their whole rating system?

Found out my white oak stock has been sitting too long...

Was reading through a Fine Woodworking article from 2019 and stumbled across a stat that said white oak loses about 30% of its bending strength after 5 years of storage. I've got a stack in my shop that's been sitting since 2018 and I was about to use it for a curved cabinet door. Had to stop and test a scrap piece first, and man it snapped way easier than I expected. Anyone else run into old lumber failing on them mid-project?

My grandma's pie crust trick finally clicked for me last week

I was at my aunt's house in Nashville last Tuesday making her apple pie recipe. For years I could never get the crust flaky like grandma's no matter what I did. My aunt watched me fumbling with the dough and said "you're overworking it, stop using your hands so much." She showed me to use a pastry cutter and barely touch the dough at all, just enough to bring it together. Then she put it in the fridge for 45 minutes before rolling. First time ever I got that perfect flaky texture without it being tough. Has anyone else had an older relative call them out on a simple mistake like that?

My buddy insisted on a sad ending for Fight Club, completely missed the point

I was rewatching Fight Club with my friend Mike last week, and he kept saying it should have ended with Tyler Durden winning and the narrator staying trapped. I argued that the whole point was the narrator breaking free from that toxic mindset, you know? By the time the credits rolled, he finally admitted I was right, especially after I pointed out how the buildings collapsing showed his symbolic rebirth. Has anyone else had an argument about a movie ending where you had to spell out the meaning for someone?

Had to pick between a disc broker and a full-service one in Chicago last month

I needed to offload a bunch of classic rock vinyl from my dad's collection, like 300 records. One broker offered me $2 a pop flat rate, the other wanted to auction them but took a 30% cut. I went with the auction guy because the guy said 'you might have some sleepers in there.' Turns out a 1968 Doors pressing went for $80 on its own. Has anyone else gambled on the auction route and won big, or did I just get lucky?

My old climbing rope finally gave out on a big oak in Springfield

It was a 60-foot line I bought back in 2015, and the sheath just tore open about 15 feet from the end while I was setting a redirect. I had to stop everything, lower down carefully, and swap it for my backup. I guess nothing lasts forever, even the gear you trust. What's the oldest piece of equipment you guys are still running that you know you should probably replace?
