Appreciation post: My grandpa's cross-peen hammer from 1968 still outworks my new one

I picked up a brand name hammer at the supply shop 3 months ago for $75. Took it to a job out in rural Ohio last Tuesday. By noon the handle felt loose and the face chipped on a 3/8 inch bracket. Switched to the old one my grandpa passed down. Heads been reground twice and the handle is wrapped in electrical tape. Worked perfect all day. Makes me wonder why folks drop cash on new tools when the old stuff holds up better. Anyone else stick with vintage?

Guy at the shop argued Batman could beat Iron Man in a fight for 20 minutes straight

I was at my local comic shop last Saturday grabbing the new X-Men issue. This dude in his 40s in a faded Punisher shirt just comes up to me out of nowhere. He starts going on about how Batman with prep time could take down Iron Man in any armor. I just nodded but he kept going. He pulled out his phone to show me some Reddit thread he saved. Went into this whole thing about Batman using some EMP gadget from an old comic. I stood there for like 15 minutes holding my coffee. Finally I just said "cool man" and walked to the counter. Dude followed me and kept talking about the Hellbat armor. Has anyone else had a random debate like this that just would not end?

Just realized how much damage a bad pruning cut can do after 5 years

I was at a job site in Portland last Wednesday removing a dead branch from a red oak and noticed this huge section of decay running right down the trunk. Turned out someone made a flush cut on a 4 inch limb about 5 years ago, and that stub collar never sealed. The rot traveled almost 2 feet down into the main stem. It really hit me that a 30 second mistake can ruin a tree for decades. How do you guys handle educating homeowners who think a clean flush cut looks better?

My neighbor laughed at my balcony tomatoes until July hit

So this guy in the unit above me, Gary, saw me setting up my balcony garden in April and goes "good luck getting anything to grow up here, the wind will kill em." Real smug about it. I just shrugged and kept going. By late July my cherry tomatoes were popping off and I left a basket of extras on his doorstep. He hasn't said a word about my peppers or cucumbers since. Anyone else have a neighbor who doubted your little setup and had to eat their words?

The time I tried to speed-cure my homemade bacon in a 200 degree oven instead of smoking it

That $20 slab of pork belly turned into a tough, salty brick after only 45 minutes, and it taught me that some shortcuts in charcuterie just arent worth taking, so has anyone else ruined a batch of bacon trying to cut corners on time?

Bought it from a guy at a weekend market who claimed it would 'align my water molecules' and after three days of drinking what tasted like muddy puddle water I realized I got scammed, has anyone else fallen for one of those pseudoscience gadgets?

I finally figured out why my face frames were racking during glue-up

Last month I was building a set of kitchen cabinets for a house in the suburbs, and every time I clamped a face frame it would twist on me. I spent a whole afternoon fighting it, shimming clamps, getting frustrated. Then my buddy stopped by and pointed out I was using my pipe clamps wrong - I had them all on one side of the frame. He showed me to alternate clamps from top and bottom to keep things flat. Now I get perfect square joints every time without screwing around. Has anyone else had this issue with pipe clamps messing up alignment?

Vent: Talked to a 30-year veteran who called me out on my safety check habits

I was bullshitting with an old timer named Dave at the yard last Tuesday, he watched me do my pre-op inspection on the Grove RT540. He said "you're just looking, not seeing" and pointed out I missed a hairline crack in the boom weld I'd walked right past. Has anyone else had a senior operator humble you with one comment like that and make you rethink how you run your whole routine?

Dropped $400 on a home energy audit and the results were a gut punch

The guy came out, did the blower door test, and showed me all the drafts I never knew about. My heating bill is high because my house leaks like a sieve, and fixing it will cost thousands I don't have right now. Has anyone found a good way to tackle these big fixes in smaller, cheaper steps?

Update on that 'magic' pump grease from the trade show

I was sure it was just overpriced hype, but after a full season on the main pump in Mobile, we haven't had a single bearing overheat. Anyone else run a full season on this stuff?
