Yeah like simonsingh said, I've felt that too, which is bad for me since I can't read.

inWatched a guy at the local guild meetup try to forge weld with a completely cold anvil face
Used to think the anvil just needed to be room temp for small stuff. Saw a guy at a demo try a cold weld on a big piece and it just would not stick, made a terrible mess. Totally changed how I see it. The heat gets sucked right out if the anvil is cold, kills your working time. Now I always make sure mine is at least warm to the touch before I even start. Makes a huge difference in getting a clean join.

Honestly, that just sounds like a lot of work for one chicken. I roast it, we eat it, and whatever's left gets thrown on a salad. Done.

Wait, you were in there for an HOUR before he said anything? That's the real crime here. I'm glad he finally spoke up, but man, I'd be so mad at myself for not asking for help sooner. Those stubby wrenches are lifesavers, they should just hand them out when you buy a house.
