Honestly, I'm so bad at reading fast I'd probably miss the whole plot either way. Tbh I just pick whichever one lets me actually look at the animation.

Yeah, that "connects with the character" point is key. I mean, sometimes the official dub just misses the vibe completely, but other times an actor really gets it. It's less about one being better and more about which version actually makes you feel something for the person on screen.
