A client's comment about my lens cleaning method made me rethink everything

I was cleaning a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L for a regular last week, using my usual microfiber cloth and a quick puff of air. He watched me for a minute and said, 'You know, that's just pushing the dust around the edges. You're going to get grit in the zoom mechanism.' I realized he was right. Now I always remove the front element ring first and clean from the center outward with a proper brush. Has anyone else had a simple tip completely change their routine?

I've been cutting my climbing rope wrong for like two years

My buddy from the Portland crew saw me doing a simple end splice and just said, 'You're losing a foot of rope every time, man.' I was pulling the core out way too far before starting the bury (like 8 inches instead of 3). It clicked that's why my rope always felt a bit short. Anyone else have a basic skill they were messing up for way too long?

Appreciation post: A talk with a retired guy at the truck stop in Billings

I was grabbing coffee before a job and got talking with an old timer who used to run a fleet shop. He said, 'We used to set injector timing with a dial indicator and a steady hand, listening for the change in the engine's hum.' I've only ever used the laptop and software. It made me think, do we lose a feel for the machine when everything is just a screen and a code? How many of you still use those old school methods sometimes?

PSA: I used to think hot glue was the only way to build props, but I was wrong.

For years, I built every sword and piece of armor with a hot glue gun and cardboard. It was cheap and fast. Then I tried making a helmet from a video game, and the glue joints kept failing in the summer heat. A friend in my local group in Cincinnati told me to try a $3 tube of contact cement. I switched six months ago. The bond is way stronger, and I can work with foam sheets way easier. It takes a bit longer to dry, but the props don't fall apart. I see so many new builders sticking with hot glue because it's popular. Has anyone else made a switch like that and been surprised?

I used to think my chalk line was fine until a retired framer in Boise said it looked like a toddler's scribble.

He showed me how to snap a truly sharp line by pulling it tight and lifting straight up, which cut my layout time in half on that whole subdivision project, so what's one piece of basic advice that completely upgraded your speed or accuracy?

I just read that the average American woman owns 7 pairs of jeans but only wears 4 of them.

I saw that stat in a report from a clothing research group last week. It made me think about how much waste we design into fashion from the start. Everyone talks about making more clothes, but maybe we should focus on making fewer, better things people actually want to keep. I'm tired of seeing new collections every month that just add to the pile. Has anyone else tried designing a smaller, more focused line that fights this trend?
