PSA: I logged my 500th squawk write-up and half of them were the same 3 gremlins
I started keeping a little notebook of every squawk I've signed off since I got my A&P, and I hit 500 write-ups last month at our hangar in Wichita. When I actually counted them up, 247 of those 500 traced back to the same three repeat offenders: loose cannon plugs, chafed wire bundles near the gear, and static wicks. That's basically half my career chasing the same gremlins around the airplane. I used to think I was just unlucky, but the log says otherwise, and it changed how I do my walkarounds. Now I spend an extra two minutes at each of those spots instead of trusting my eyes to catch it later. The new guys laugh when I pull out the notebook, but one of them copied the idea after he ate a 3 hour delay on a cannon plug I found in 30 seconds. What are your repeat offenders? I want to know if it's the same junk on your fleet or if I'm just cursed.
Does the cannon plug thing ever actually get fixed or do you just keep finding the same loose ones over and over? Because on our fleet it's the same deal with those little suckers and I swear half of them don't even have a safety wire on them anymore. We had one pop loose on a Navajo last spring and of course it was the one behind the panel where you need to be a contortionist to reach it. I started carrying a mirror on a stick just for cannon plugs and it has paid for itself ten times over. Static wicks are my other one, seems like every preflight I'm finding one bent or snapped off from some ramper's cart.
