Finally cracked a 3.5% brine after six failed attempts

I used to just dump salt in by eye and hope for the best with my pickles, but last month I bought a $15 scale and started weighing everything. Now my kraut turns out crunchy and sour every time instead of mushy. Anyone else have a breakthrough after switching to precise measurements?

That $80 auto-taper I grabbed off Amazon... what a joke.

Jammed up on the third joint. Mud leaked everywhere. Took me longer to clean it than to do the whole room by hand. Anybody find a taper that actually works for under $200?

Debate: Should you trust that old librarian who told you to 'never judge a book by its cover'?

I got told by a retired book scout at a garage sale in Austin to always flip through any book with water damage because it hides first editions, but I tried that on a soggy old copy of 'The Swiss Family Robinson' and got a stained moldy mess with no hidden value, so has anyone else found that logic actually holds up or is it a myth?

3 years ago at O'Hare I swapped the wrong LRU on a 737 and no one noticed

It was a Friday night shift in Chicago, I was exhausted, and swapped a transponder with a similar part number without double-checking the pin layout. The plane flew 12 more legs before someone caught it because it somehow passed all the tests anyway. Has anyone else had one of those "whoops" moments that just worked out?

I bought a $300 home compost tumbler that fell apart in 6 months

Last spring I decided to start composting at home to cut down on food waste. I found a popular brand of compost tumbler online and spent $300 on it thinking it would last years. By month four the plastic latch cracked, and by month six the whole barrel was warped from the sun. Turns out I could have built a simple wire bin for around $30 that works just as well or better. Has anyone else had trouble with those pricey composters not holding up?

Customer told me my refrigerator repair was too loud, changed my whole approach

I had a guy call me back three times about a Whirlpool fridge I fixed in his basement last month. He kept saying the compressor was rattling but my meter showed everything in spec. Finally he just said 'can you actually listen to it' and yeah, that vibration was loose. Now I always torque the compressor mounts to 35 lb-ft instead of just snug. Any of you ever had a customer hear something your tools missed?

Just had a new guy strip a bolt head on a 3-day-old job

Last Tuesday I was showing this new kid how to torque injector lines on a Cummins ISX. Told him three times to use a crowfoot, not a regular socket. He ignored me, slipped, and rounded off the bolt head on cylinder 4. Took me 4 hours with an extractor set and a torch to get it out. Now the whole job is behind schedule and the customer is calling every hour. Has anyone else dealt with trainees who just won't listen to basic advice?

The neighbor who tried to prune my maple tree with hedge clippers

My neighbor across the street decided to give my 15-year-old sugar maple a 'haircut' last Tuesday while I was at work, hacking off 4-inch diameter branches with hedge clippers and leaving jagged stubs everywhere. I came home to find sap bleeding out of those cuts and bark ripped down the trunk from the weight of the branches tearing as they fell. How do you gently tell someone their 'help' just cost you a tree that might not recover for 3 seasons?

Tried glue-down LVP instead of click-lock on a commercial job yesterday

I always use click-lock for residential but this was a 2,000 sq ft retail space in Austin and the subfloor was super uneven. Glue-down was way faster and no hollow spots at all. Anyone else make the switch for bigger jobs?

That one Sunday when grandma burned the gravy and we all ate in silence

It was like 20 years ago. My grandma always made Sunday pot roast. One week she left the gravy on high and it scorched. The whole kitchen smelled like burnt flour. She was so upset she wouldn't talk for an hour. We all ate the roast dry, no one said a word. My mom finally cracked a joke about it being a 'new recipe.' That whole week she refused to cook. Has anyone else had a family meal go completely sideways like that?
