Wasted $80 on a fancy cat water fountain that my cat ignored

I bought this ceramic water fountain off Amazon for like $80 because I thought my cat would love running water. Nope. She took one look at it and went back to drinking out of the bathroom sink faucet. The fountain sat there for 3 weeks making noise before I finally took it apart and cleaned it for the last time. Now it's in a box in the garage. Did anyone else have a cat that just refused a fountain no matter what you tried?

PSA: Found a rats nest behind a patch panel at a school in Tucson yesterday

I went to pull some old Cat5e at a middle school and found a full on rat colony living behind the rack. The droppings had corroded like 6 ports on the panel. Has anyone else dealt with rodent damage in their IDFs and what did you use to seal the entry points?

That tip about using a candle to lube stubborn zippers changed my life

My buddy Mike, a general contractor from Cleveland, told me to rub a plain wax candle on a stuck zipper instead of buying spray. I thought he was full of it until my 20 year old Carhartt jacket zipper locked up last week. One swipe of a $1 birthday candle and it slid like new. Anyone else got weird household items that work better than the real tool?

The thing people get wrong about the old food court fountains

I keep seeing posts calling those big tile fountains in mall food courts from the 80s and 90s "water features" or "art installations." No, they were just really expensive places to lose your keys and have your little brother fall into after eating a Sbarro. I spent every Saturday at the Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, New Jersey from 1987 to 1993, and that fountain was mostly a coin graveyard with pool float toys stuck in the filter. People forget those things were LOUD too, you couldn't hear your mom calling you from across the food court over the water. Am I the only one who remembers the smell of chlorine mixed with day-old Chinese food coming off those things?

Hot take: Most homeowners don't need a full diagnostic machine

I was talking to a guy at the supply house in Phoenix last week who said he still fixes 80% of stuff with just a multimeter and his ears. He made me realize I was relying too much on my fancy tester instead of actually listening to what the fridge or dryer was telling me. Do you think we lean on expensive tools too much instead of the basics?

I had to quit "Infinite Jest" after 150 pages but I can't stop thinking about it. Started reading it last month because a friend swore it would change how I think about entertainment and addiction. Got about 150 pages in and just couldn't keep going with all the footnotes and weird tangents. But here's the thing, I compared my experience to when I tried reading "Gravity's Rainbow" a few years ago and gave up after 80 pages. That one I forgot about completely. With "Infinite Jest" I keep googling summaries and reading essays about it even though I bailed. So I'm wondering if a book can still be valuable even when you quit it. Has anyone else had a book stick with you like that after you stopped reading it?

Just watched a guy at a group ride snap his chain because he never checks for stretch

I mean, I checked his bike after and the chain had almost half an inch of play over a foot, he said he'd been riding it for 2 years without ever measuring. Have any of you actually seen a chain fail mid-ride like that or am I just unlucky with the people I end up next to?

Wasted 3 months letting AI write my SEO meta descriptions until a client called me out

I was using ChatGPT to batch out all my meta descriptions for client sites. Thought I was being smart saving time. Then last Tuesday a client in Phoenix sends me a screenshot of their page showing a description that literally listed a coffee shop menu from a different city. The AI hallucinated the whole thing because the source article mentioned 'brew' somewhere. I went back and checked 40 other descriptions I had pushed live. Found 8 more that were either wrong or made no sense. Now I hand write every single one. Has anyone else caught AI tools making up fake local details like that?

Hit my 10,000th shutter repair last Tuesday and had to stop for a minute

I was working on a Pentax Spotmatic from the late 60s, just replacing the foil curtains like I've done a thousand times. My logbook showed it was number 10,000 exactly. That number hit me harder than I expected because I started doing this out of my garage in 1995, never thinking it would turn into a real business. Now I'm wondering how many of those cameras actually got back to taking pictures versus just sitting on a shelf. Has anyone else kept count of a specific job that made you realize how long you've been at this?

Took me four map re-downloads before I realized the John Muir Trail app kept crashing because my phone storage was completely full.

Had 47 photos of the same granite peak taking up 3 gigs while I was sitting there blaming the trail for bad signal when the real problem was I hadn't cleared my cache since Yosemite Valley, anyone else run into storage issues mid-route?
