Do you think mall owners should keep the power running to keep up appearances, or is that just wasting money? I swear I saw a mannequin twitch in the window of the old Forever 21. What's your take on leaving the lights on?

Had to decide between a used copy of the 1st edition Galaxy Trucker or the new edition for twice the price...

I went with the beat up 1st edition from a guy on Craigslist in Dayton for 30 bucks and the cardboard tokens are stained but honestly it plays just fine and I saved 40 dollars, has anyone else taken the older version over a shiny new box and regretted it down the line?

My $50 AI meal planner subscription was a total waste

I signed up for one of those AI meal planning apps last month. It was supposed to create custom menus based on what you have in your fridge. Cost me $50 for a monthly subscription. After three days I realized it kept suggesting recipes with ingredients I never buy, like quinoa and kale. I work 12 hour shifts at the restaurant kitchen and I don't have time to hunt down specialty items. The app also didn't account for leftovers or repurposing food from the night before. I stuck with it for two weeks hoping it would learn my habits but it never got better. Has anyone else tried these AI meal planners and found one that actually works for real people?

That $15 food court map I bought off eBay was a total waste

I found a vintage map of the West Ridge Mall food court from 1988 on eBay and thought it'd be a cool piece of history. Paid $15 plus shipping, got it in the mail last week, and it's literally just a blurry photocopy of the floorplan. No colors, no detail, just spots for Orange Julius and Sbarro that you can barely read. Anyone else get burned buying old mall memorabilia online?

My level went missing so I tried using a 2x4 as a straight edge on a brick wall

Last Thursday I was laying a garden wall out back of a house in Oakville and somehow my 4 foot level vanished into thin air. I searched the truck, the site, even the portajohn with no luck. I was in a hurry because the client was coming by at noon to check the progress. So I grabbed a good straight 2x4 from the lumber pile and figured I'd just sight down it like a madman. Turns out if you clamp a string line tight against the wood at both ends it actually works pretty well for checking plumb on face brick. It's not gonna replace a real level any time soon but it got me through that course without any major wavy spots. Has anyone else pulled a dumb substitute trick on site that somehow worked out okay?

Hit 30 years old and finally noticed my torque sequence was backwards

I was helping my buddy swap a transmission in his 91 Civic last weekend and he watched me tighten the bellhousing bolts going around in a circle. He just laughed and asked if I was trying to warp the case on purpose. That's when it hit me that I had been doing a criss cross pattern all wrong for like 12 years. I always just went clockwise from the top left because that's how my dad did it on his trucks growing up. We had to pull the trans twice before I learned the hard way why you start from the middle and work outward. My buddy showed me a torque sequence diagram on his phone and it made perfect sense honestly. Has anyone else had that moment where a simple habit was totally off and nobody told you?

My dad's offhand comment about his old percolator got me thinking

I was over at my parent's house last weekend and my dad pulled out his old stovetop percolator from the 70s. He said something like 'you kids and your fancy machines, we just boiled water and it worked fine.' At first I laughed it off but later I realized he had a point. I've spent probably $400 on gear over the last 2 years trying to dial in the perfect pour over. Meanwhile his coffee was honestly just fine and he didn't stress about it at all. It made me wonder if I've been overcomplicating things just for the sake of having a hobby. Has anyone else ever went back to a simpler setup and actually liked it more?

Northside vs Southside in winter driving is no contest

I've lived in Edmonton for 12 years now and I swear the snow removal on the south side is way better than north of the river. Last winter during that big dump in February, my buddy on the north side said his street didn't get plowed for 5 days. Meanwhile my avenue in the south was cleared within 24 hours both times. I know it depends on your specific neighborhood but I think the city just prioritizes certain areas. Has anyone else noticed this pattern or am I imagining things?

Overheard a city inspector say climbing spurs on a living oak is a death sentence for the tree

I always thought spurs were fine for removals but he said even one climb with them can start decay that takes decades to kill the tree. Any other arborists out there switch to rope-only for live trees?

My daily spread was a mess until I tried a parking lot experiment

I kept running out of space for tasks in my bullet journal because I'd write too big. Last week I was sitting in my car at the Target on Main Street waiting for my kid and I drew tiny 4mm squares on a scrap page. Turns out those mini squares fit three lines of cramped handwriting and I can now fit 2 weeks on one spread instead of 5 pages. Anyone else ever randomly solve a layout problem in the weirdest places?
