inMy uncle swore by using a vinegar soak for cleaning calcite off a fossil I dug up near Cincinnati, and after a week of watching it fizz, the detail was incredible.
...and that's exactly how I ended up with a pile of gravel that used to be a trilobite. My uncle told me the same thing about vinegar, swore by it for years. I tried it on a piece of limestone with some small brachiopods and it came out great, like the rock just melted away. Then I got cocky and tried it on a darker calcite chunk and it just crumbled into a sandy mess. Lesson learned: know your mineral better than I know myself apparently.

inHad to choose between code compliance and making the customer happy yesterday
Nashville is strict about that stuff, and a hidden box is a fire hazard waiting to happen. I'd rather lose a customer than my license over something that simple.

inSaw a huge change in my lawn after switching watering times
You used to say later was fine, but this makes more sense actually.

inThat $35 oven mitt I bought from a fancy kitchen store saved my hand but not my dinner
Hey come on, you can't blame the mitt for operator error. That thing did its job perfectly - it protected your hand from the heat of the dish. The problem is you didn't adjust your grip for a glass surface with a silicone mitt. That's on you, not the tool. If you'd handled it with the same care you'd use for a wet plate or a greasy pan, you'd have had no issues. Most kitchen accidents happen when people get too comfortable or rush through tasks. The mitt solved the heat problem exactly like it was supposed to. Why blame a tool for doing what it says on the box?

inA dryer belt snapped on me in the middle of a job in a tight apartment laundry closet
Yeah, I read something the other day about this being super common. @oliviabennett nailed it with the universal belt trick
