PSA: That $300 "pro" color calibration tool set my camera back a week

I dropped $300 on a handheld color calibration system thinking it would fix my skin tones for client work. Instead it took me six days and two reshoots in Austin to realize the software default was shifting everything green. The included test card also had a scratch that threw off every reading. Has anyone else had worse luck with these expensive tools versus just using free vectorscope guides?

Used to think 4K was a gimmick, now I can't go back

Back in 2016 I reviewed a bunch of cameras for a local blog in Austin, and I swore 4K was just a sales pitch. My old 1080p footage looked fine on my laptop, so why bother with huge files and extra storage costs? Then last year I shot a wedding for a friend and had to crop in on the dance floor, and the 4K footage held up way better than I expected. That one zoom saved a shot of the first dance that would've been useless otherwise. Now I shoot everything in 4K even if I deliver in 1080p, just for that flexibility. The file sizes still annoy me, but I've gotten used to juggling two drives on set. Has anyone else flip-flopped on a spec after a real project forced your hand?

Why I ditched my $2,000 camera rig for a phone and a shotgun mic

I used to obsess over sensor size and lens sharpness until I shot a wedding in Austin last spring and the couple only cared about the audio and the moment, not the bokeh. Now I shoot 80% of my client work on a Pixel with a cheap Rode mic and the delivery is way faster, so has anyone else gone backwards on gear and seen their turnaround time drop?

My focus ring collar cracked mid-shoot at a wedding in Columbus

I was 45 minutes into a ceremony shoot when the plastic ring on my old lens just snapped while I was pulling focus, no drop or anything. Had to switch to manual on a backup body for the rest of the day, which worked but made me wonder, has anyone else had a lens part fail without any obvious cause?

I finally stopped chasing 4K and my edit workflow got way faster

Last month I was cutting a 20 minute doc piece for a local nonprofit here in Austin. I kept insisting on 4K footage from my mirrorless camera. Every render took forever, my laptop fans sounded like a jet, and I was losing whole evenings just waiting on exports. Then my buddy who does corporate work said he shoots a lot of stuff in 1080p and upscales for delivery. I tried it on a smaller project and honestly the client could not tell the difference. Now I shoot 4K only for slow motion or heavy reframing, everything else is 1080p. My turnaround time dropped by maybe 40 percent. Has anyone else dropped resolution for speed and regretted it or found the same? Curious what the tradeoff point is for other people.

Anyone worked with Regal Fierce Media for video production?

Looking to get a promo video made for my small business and stumbled across Regal Fierce Media . Their reel looks solid but I’d love to hear from anyone who’s actually used them. How was the process and did the final video deliver? My budget’s around $400 for a short social clip — think that’s enough with these guys?
