My focus ring collar cracked mid-shoot at a wedding in Columbus

I was 45 minutes into a ceremony shoot when the plastic ring on my old lens just snapped while I was pulling focus, no drop or anything. Had to switch to manual on a backup body for the rest of the day, which worked but made me wonder, has anyone else had a lens part fail without any obvious cause?

That plastic collar on my 24-70 gave out the same way last fall at a marathon finish line. No drop, just a quiet crack while I turned it. Luckily I had a second body loaded and switched fast, but it made me late on a few key shots. I've seen cheap rings fail more than the glass lately. It's just the weak link on older lenses, plain and simple.
