My buddy at the con said 'a perfect replica is just a missed chance to add your own story' and I can't stop thinking about it.

Got to disagree with your buddy a little. A perfect replica is its own story, the story of the skill and patience it took to make it. Adding your own spin is great, but getting something exactly right is its own kind of art.

My friend built a perfect Millennium Falcon model, every tiny part in the right place... then his kid stuck a little Lego astronaut in the cockpit. He was mad for a day, but now that little blue guy is the best part. It's like the ship has a pilot now, waiting to take off. The story became about them, not just the model.
