inQuestion about a weird root flare I saw in a Denver park last week
Actually I've seen that cause more harm than good. Digging out a big mound can mess with the roots that have already grown into that soil. It's often better to just grade the soil away from the trunk gently instead of a deep excavation.

inTbh, my entire balcony crop got wiped out last week from a single aphid hitchhiker
Ugh, that's the worst feeling. How long do you keep new plants in quarantine now?

inA catering gig in Miami showed me why you should never trust a client's 'fully stocked' kitchen
Yeah, @evanh27, that's solid advice. I learned the hard way when I moved last year and missed a broken window latch. My routine now is a 15-minute walk-through with a checklist on my phone, checking every switch and faucet. It saved me from a leaky toilet in my current place.

inMy sourdough starter from a friend versus my own from scratch
Watched my neighbor try the same thing last spring. She got a bit of starter from a bakery and her own jar of flour and water mix. The bakery starter made a good loaf in three days, but her from-scratch one just sat there like glue for over a week, and even then it made a brick.

inFinally caved and bought a $300 thermal camera for my phone
Honestly, that's the kind of thing that makes it worth it. I grabbed one a while back just for fun, but tbh it saved me a huge headache last winter. My own thermostat kept reading way too cold, and I couldn't figure out why. Pointed the camera at the wall around it and found a massive cold spot from a draft coming right through the outlet behind it. Never would have found it without seeing the temperature difference like that.
