I thought my chickens needed a huge coop, but a trip to a farm in Oregon changed my mind

For two years, I built my flock a 12x8 foot coop because everyone said more space is always better. Then I visited a friend's small farm in Bend, Oregon, and saw her healthy, calm birds in a simple 4x6 setup with a huge, secure run. She said, 'The coop is just for sleeping and laying, the run is where they live.' My big coop was just collecting more poop and drafts. Now I'm rethinking my whole setup. Has anyone else downsized their coop and seen better results?

My buttercream choice turned a birthday cake into a science project

I had to pick between Swiss meringue buttercream or American buttercream for my nephew's birthday cake. I went with Swiss because a blog said it was 'silky smooth' and 'less sweet'. Well, my kitchen in Austin hit 90 degrees last weekend and the whole thing just MELTED off the cake layers. It looked like a sad, yellow river flowing off the counter. I had to scrape it all into a bowl and freeze it for an hour to save it. Has anyone else had a frosting just give up on them in the heat?

Vent: A client's oak went from healthy to a hazard in under 6 months because they ignored my advice about mulch volcanoes.

I told them to keep the mulch away from the trunk base, but they piled it 12 inches high, and now the bark is rotting and there's a major girdling root issue that's going to cost thousands to fix.

Spent 14 hours stripping a single layer of milk paint off a 1920s dresser.

A salon in Savannah had the most calming setup I've ever seen

I was visiting my sister down there last month and popped into a little place called The Twisted Scissors for a trim. The whole back area where they did color had these soft, warm lamps instead of harsh overhead lights, and they played quiet jazz music. It felt more like a spa than a salon, and every client looked completely relaxed. Has anyone else tried changing their station's lighting to help with client comfort?

My old steel brush finally gave up the ghost on a job in Boise last Tuesday

It was a brush I'd had for maybe eight years, the kind with the long handle you can add sections to. The wire just snapped off clean at the base on the third pass down a flue. In my experience, you can't really fix that, so I had to finish the job with my backup nylon brush, which just doesn't bite the same on heavy creosote. It got me thinking about how all my gear from when I started seems to be wearing out at once. Anyone have a steel brush brand they've stuck with for a good long while?
