DAE have a shed that turned into a total mouse hotel?

My 8x10 shed in the backyard was overrun after a cold snap in November. I found a nest made from my old potting soil bags and chewed up seed packets. What's the best way to mouse-proof a wooden shed without using poison?

Just realized my sourdough starter works way better with a $5 digital scale than my old cup measures.

Shoutout to the old Otis relay logic trainers from trade school

We had to wire up a whole floor control circuit on one of those boards, and it took me two days to get it right. Then last year, my company sent me to a class on the new PC-based simulators. I had the same circuit running in about an hour because the software showed me the exact spot where my virtual wire was wrong. It was a huge time save for learning. Anyone else make the switch from the physical trainers to the computer ones?

I keep seeing guys at the shop try to soften old sealant on tempered shower doors with a heat gun set to high, but last month in a Tampa job we had a panel crack from the sudden temperature change. In my experience, a steady medium heat and a sharp blade works better and avoids the risk. Has anyone else found a safer method for this specific task?

Tried a new way to mix my own color for a client's stubborn gray coverage

I had a client with resistant gray hair and had to pick between a standard 20 volume developer or a 10 volume with a longer processing time. I went with the 10 volume and left it on for 45 minutes, which gave me much softer, more even results without any banding. Has anyone else had better luck with lower volume for tough gray?

Just realized I was overcomplicating my tool offsets after talking to an old timer at the shop

I was setting up a new job on the Haas yesterday and this guy named Ray, who's been running machines since the 80s, watched me for a minute. He said, 'Kid, you're checking every tool like it's a brain surgery. For roughing steel, just touch off the first one and let the others ride. If you're within five thou, you're burning money on cycle time.' It hit different because he wasn't being mean, just practical. I tried it on a run of twenty flange plates and saved like fifteen minutes of air cutting. Anyone else have a simple rule they follow for when to be super precise versus when to just get chips flying?

My entire project broke because of one missing semicolon

Spent three hours on Wednesday trying to get my first JavaScript function to run. The console just kept saying 'unexpected token'. Checked my logic, my variables, everything. My friend finally looked at it and pointed to line 15. I forgot a semicolon. One character. That was it. Felt like the biggest idiot. Has anyone else lost a whole evening to a tiny syntax error like that?

I've been using the wrong tip on my soldering iron for years without knowing

I was fixing a Nintendo Switch yesterday and kept burning the tiny pads on the board, which never happens to me. After about an hour of messing up, I looked at my iron and realized I'd been using a big chisel tip for all my fine work. I switched to a pointed tip I had in my kit and it was like night and day, the joints were clean in seconds. I guess I just got used to fighting the old tip and thought that was normal. Had a shellac bloom disaster on a 1920s sideboard in Savannah

I was putting the final coat on this piece in a damp garage last fall. The next morning, the whole surface was cloudy and white. I panicked, but an old book said to lightly rub it with a cloth dampened with denatured alcohol. I tried it on a small spot, and it worked like magic. The bloom wiped right off without hurting the finish. Has anyone else fixed a shellac bloom this way, or do you have a different trick?

My backpacking route epiphany came from a dead battery

I was deep in the woods when my phone died, and I had no paper map! I had to find my way using sun position and stream flow. It taught me that over-relying on gadgets can leave you helpless. Now I always carry a physical map and compass. This simple change has boosted my confidence on the trail!
