I got called out for my orchid care routine and it actually helped

A friend visited my place in Austin and straight up told me my phalaenopsis orchids looked stressed from overwatering. She pointed out the wrinkled leaves and said 'you're drowning them with love, give them a dry week'. I switched to watering only every 10 days and the new growth looks way better now. Has anyone else had a plant care habit that was actually hurting things?

Everyone says to pack light, but my carry-on only trip to Lisbon was a total disaster

I followed the advice to the letter, just a 25L backpack for a 10 day trip. The problem? Lisbon in March is not the sunny pictures you see. It poured for three days straight. I had one thin hoodie and a rain jacket that soaked through in an hour. Had to buy a proper coat and extra pants at a local shop, which cost me 80 euros I hadn't budgeted for. The 'hack' of doing laundry in the sink also failed because nothing dried in the damp hostel room. So my 'budget' trip ended up more expensive and miserable than if I'd just checked a bag with the right gear. Has anyone else been burned by the 'one bag' rule when the weather didn't cooperate?

Used to wrap my pork shoulder in foil after 4 hours, now I just let it ride.

My buddy in Kansas City saw me do it and said I was just steaming the bark away. Tried his way on my next cook and the bark was way better, dark and crunchy. Anyone else ditch the wrap for pork butts?

My grandma's apple butter recipe from her farm in Ohio seems to have vanished

She used to make huge batches every fall in a copper kettle over an open fire, stirring for hours with a wooden paddle. I found her old notes but they just say 'spices to taste' and I can't remember the exact mix of cinnamon, cloves, and allspice she used. Has anyone else tried to recreate a family recipe that's missing a key detail like this?

Update: My approach to color correction has completely flipped since 2015.

Back then, I'd just keep adding pigment until it looked right, which often took 45 minutes. Now, I use a color wheel and start with a direct opposite, cutting my time in half and getting cleaner results. What's the biggest time-saver you've picked up for color fixes?

I was cutting laminate planks wrong for a decade until a job in Tempe

I always used my miter saw for every cut, thinking it gave the cleanest edge. On a big condo job in Tempe last month, the super told me to just score and snap the short cuts to save time. I tried it on a scrap piece and the factory edge was perfect, no chipping. I must have wasted hundreds of hours over the years. Do you guys score and snap for short cuts, or is there a better trick?

Found out a 6.7 Powerstroke's oil filter holds way more than I thought

I was draining one at the shop yesterday and it took a full 2.5 gallons to refill, which just seemed wild for a filter. Anyone else run into a surprisingly large capacity on a common part?

Managed to fix a bubbled patch without a full redo

Had this old wall where the plaster was bubbling up. Mixed a small batch and feathered it in perfectly. It dried seamless, and you can't even tell it was there. What's your go-to method for blending repairs like this? Always looking to improve my technique.
