That time last week I nearly dropped a load because of a bad hand signal

I was working a job in Cleveland last Thursday, setting steel beams on a new warehouse. The spotter kept giving me signals that were just a little off, like his arm angles were all wrong. I stopped the lift and climbed down to talk to him. Turns out he was a temp and had never worked with a crane before. We spent 20 minutes going over basic hand signals before I felt safe to continue. It saved me from a real disaster, I think. Has anyone else had to train a spotter on the fly like that?

Still saw someone try to skip the scalp check before a color service today

Had a new client last week who told me her previous stylist in Cleveland never did a patch test and she ended up with a chemical burn on her hairline, and that's what finally convinced me to always stick to the 48-hour rule no matter how rushed I feel.

Took me 3 months to find a cat coffee table book that wasn't cringey

I spent way too long hunting for a cat coffee table book that wasn't full of weird art or lazy photos. Every one I picked up had either creepy painted cats or blurry shots that looked like they were taken on a flip phone. Finally found one at a used bookstore in Denver called 'Stray Cats of Tokyo' that actually has good composition and real stories. Anyone else struggle to find a cat book that feels less like a gag gift and more like legit photography?

Bay Village versus Avon Lake for family stuff. Bay won by a mile.

Spent 3 months debating which community to join for playgroups and library programs. Bay Village's rec center programs were way more organized and cheaper by about $150 a year. Anyone else find one westside suburb just clicks better for your family?

Noticed a huge change in carpet seams over the last 5 years

I've been installing carpets for about 12 years now. I saw this big shift around 2019 when more people started ordering those really thick plush carpets from online places. Before that, seams were pretty easy to hide with a good power stretcher and some trimming. Now with these thicker piles, the seams pop out way more if you don't have the right tools. I had a job in Columbus last spring where the homeowner ordered a 3 inch thick carpet and the seam looked terrible after the first day. I ended up having to go back and use a seam roller with way more pressure and a hot iron to get it flat. A lot of guys I talk to say they see this same problem now too. Has anyone figured out a good trick for these thicker carpets or do you just have to plan more time for the seam work?

Dropped $300 on a thermal camera and found my drafty window issue in 10 minutes

My heating bill was stupid high last winter so I bought one of those FLIR cameras for my phone. Spent 300 bucks figuring out where my old windows were leaking air. Found gaps I never would have spotted by feel. Sealed them up with caulk and weatherstripping and saved about 40 bucks a month since then. It paid for itself in like 7 months. Anyone else drop cash on a tool that actually worked out or did you get burned?

Fabric paint instead of expensive vinyl saved my armor build

I was trying to make a Mandalorian chest plate for under $30 and got stuck on the detailing. Real vinyl sheets were like $15 a pop at Joann's. Then I grabbed a $2 bottle of metallic fabric paint from Walmart and painted right over craft foam. It cracked a bit after 3 wears but honestly looked better than the shiny plastic stuff. Has anyone else hacked a material swap like this and gotten decent results?

I finally tried painting old glass jars with chalk paint instead of spray paint and I'm shocked at which one actually lasted longer without chipping

After 3 months of using both methods on mason jars for my bathroom odds and ends, the chalk paint held up way better than the spray paint but it took twice as long to apply, so which do you guys think is worth the trade off for a quick weekend project?

Vent: My lemon meringue pie disaster at the county fair bake-off last summer

I spent 4 hours on a lemon meringue pie for the county fair bake-off in Des Moines, only to have it weep a puddle of syrup all over the display table by judging time. Some folks say you have to cook the filling longer, others swear by adding cornstarch at the end. Which method do you stick with to keep your pies from leaking?

Unpopular opinion: My friend's drone shots of the old Concord Galleria were boring compared to my ground level photos.

He spent hours getting aerial views of the empty parking lot, but my close ups of the cracked tile fountain and a single shoe left in the food court told a much sadder story. Why do people think a dead mall looks more interesting from 200 feet up?
